Educating
14th July, 2010. By Raylene Boots
I was busy last week learning. Did you know teachers do that with their summers? We do.
Monday, Tuesday, and Friday I was at the Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit learning how to improve my teaching through collaboration with other teachers in Beaver County. I am pumped to develop authentic assessments for my students (that sounds way less exciting than I think it is) and already have great ideas for the first two units in World Cultures. On Tuesday and Wednesday I was at Duquesne University for the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh’s Summer Institute for Teachers. They always have a wonderful agenda; last year I learned so much about the European Union. This year their focus is the global threat of cyber security and terrorism.
Today, our crew is off to Arlington, Virginia for the first of three “captures” this month as part of the Virtual Training Environment production. The commercial side of the business is interesting to me when it connects to the classroom. We have been capturing classes concerning cyber protection and Homeland Security. I am not at a teacher’s seminar, but I am still learning. Being present at the filming of these classes gives me an insight not available to most educators.
Few people who hold down two jobs can effectively combine them, so I feel very lucky to have done so. Teaching and learning make me happy, and it feels good to be able to educate clients to make good video choices. The combination of my experience as a teacher and my years as a videographer provide our wedding couples with advice they can’t get anywhere else.
